5 Minute Camping Dramatic Play

April 5, 2017 · by: ourplayfulhome Leave a Comment

Oh my goodness! We had SO much fun with this dramatic play.  It took me five minutes to set up.  I put the tent up, made a little fire, and put some sleeping bags in the tent.

I made the logs out of rolled up brown paper, and the fire was just construction paper.

We do not have sleeping bags yet, so we just used blankets and pillows for coziness.

I did this activity as part of our Joy School lesson on Fall, so when our friends came over we did the following activities:

-We roasted marshmallows (popsicle sticks…but you could have your kids hunt for sticks outside to use)

-Sang songs (we did songs about Fall)

-Told “scary” stories (just made up stories about Boston and each of his two friends scaring all the monsters away….they LOVED this.  I probably told stories for 15 minutes.  Princess T scared the ghost away, Superhero Gold Beast Boston got a monster with his fire eyes and Kitty Cat P ate up all the scary mice.  Little kids LOVE made up stories where they are the hero!)

-Got all cozy in our beds and looked up at the stars (we just pretended, but you could tape stars to the ceiling or use twinkle lights….this would be a great way to teach numbers by counting the stars, or teach about constellations)

-Read books in our sleeping bags

Boston fell over because he was laughing so hard…toddlers are so hilarious.

After they played for a while I had a mean old bear (me) come and mess up the beds and hide the fire wood.  The kids had to make the beds again and find all the fire wood.  Once they found the wood they did a fire dance and chanted “Fire” to get the fire to come.  I would slowly put the flames back on the fire.  They LOVED this.

Boston played by himself in the tent for an hour later that afternoon.  Best dramatic play yet!  Have fun cute little adventurers.

  • Today's Take-A-Minutr-Tuesday is a fun, outdoor and educational activity all wrapped up into one!
  • Sometimes it is SO MUCH WORK to get out and do something fun with your kids! Packing up the little people, and myself, for a day at the lake always pushes me to my limit as a mom.
Today, I ended up getting really short with my 6 year old out of frustration. After cooling down I apologized and explained, "when we go to do fun things mama has to do a lot of work to make sure we have EVERYTHING we need. No one else really helps. This makes me feel worried and stressed and even mad. I'm sorry i was grumpy with you. Could you help me by buckling your sister in?" Fast forward to 2 hours later when we are all in a little piece of heaven, swimming playing and happy. I'm so glad I took care of something I would have felt guilty about right away so that I can enjoy the rest of our day!
As soon as you feel Mama guilt for something you handled inappropriately fix it. Apologize. Explain what you're feeling so they can understand. And then move on. No one is perfect and its good for our children to know that includes mama.
  • Merry-half-Christmas everyone... That's in July right? Took some awesome advice from a podcast I listen to, @3in30podcast, and let my 6 year old wear a Christmas dress to church today because this mama doesn't have time to fight with her children about things that really don't matter.
Made daughters day ✔️
Daughter looked presentable regardless of clothing colors ✔️
Avoided fighting Sunday morning ✔️ There are some things that we don't have to fight about with our strong willed children. So glad I followed good advice today and Said Yes to the Dress!
  • Okay friends, is this a local thing? If it isn't I want to spread it across the country. In my town we have a HEART TREE. I've actually seen heart trees in a few places along the river that runs through our town. They are always two trees that have come from one base. The locals bring rocks, that look like hearts, to decorate the trees with.
My children ADORE this tradition. Even if we are out of town they will find a heart rock and we put it in a safe place in the back of the car to bring to the tree the next time we walked by it. Anytime we e walking by the river they are on the search for a heart rock. It is a fabulous tradition. I am wondering if anyone else has a heart tree in their town?
  • WE SURVIVED! My family went on a grand 12 hour road trip, spent 3 nights away from home, visited family and friends in three different states and I only lost my cool 2 times! Traveling is hard. It's hard on grown ups and even more so on the kids. If your traveling soon I challenge you to be patient, understanding, calm and bring tons of diet Coke!
Just remember, in a few years, you won't remember being frustrated at kids staying up too late or the stupid fight some cousins got into, or how your one year old screamed like a banshee if you looked at her wrong, you will remember the good stuff, and the awesome family pictures you took! So don't sweat the small stuff, your there for the big picture stuff!
